Freight Class

How to determine the right
Freight Class

  1. Freight class is based on weight, length and height, density, ease of handling, value and liability.

  2. Stow-ability: Excessive weight, length or protrusions can make freight impossible to load with other freight.

  3. Handling: Freight that poses no handling difficulties represent ease loading where freight that has difficulties due to weight, shape, fragility or hazardous properties generally assigned a higher classification number.

  4. Liability: Generally, corresponds with the probability of freight theft or damage, perish-ability or risk of spontaneous combustion which generally is awarded a value per pound.

  • There are two ways to identify the right classification for your freight. One is by one of the 18 NMFC numbers assigned by the National Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) as shown below. They range from 50-500. Higher the classification number, the more expensive it is to ship. If you can’t find your product’s classification, please contact me at tdurst@durst.....

  • Density and Value (weight x length x height)/ (1728 cubic inches = 1 cubic foot) 1728= cubic feet

  • If the shipment has more than one item, repeat this step for each item.

  • Divide weight of the packing unit by the volume

  • Look up the standardized table to find out the estimated freight class of the shipment. Usually the lower the density, the lower the freight class. Higher the classification number/rating corresponds to higher cost to ship your freight.
